It’s really the undergarments that make putting chic postpartum outfits together so tough, but I’m not one to back down from a challenge. Hospital underwear, maxi pads, and nursing bras aside, getting dressed every day seriously lifts my spirits. I’ve been like this my entire life—from dressing up in matchy matchy outfits for middle school to getting dressed for days around my apartment in 2020. Putting together outfits will always be one of my favorite parts of each day. I can’t wait until I can slip back into my favorite high-waisted trousers and jeans, but I’m trying to be patient with myself as I heal from having our gorgeous twins. Keep scrolling for the four outfit combinations I’m wearing right now to feel confident and comfortable in my postpartum body.
the oversized shirt
All I want to wear postpartum are oversized pieces that still feel chic because they are forgiving on my recovering midsection without looking slobbish. This blouse by new-to-me maternity and postpartum brand, Frances Hart, falls right into that category. It’s the perfect classic shirt to throw on for any occasion from a night out (what’s that?!) to a casual lunch. The pleated detailing on the back of the top feels extra special, so I dressed it up a bit with my maternity jeans (yes, I’m still wearing them!) and a fancy shoe. It would be just as cute with a great pair of flats or a cool pair of boots for more casual days.

the billowy mini dress
This dress silhouette is officially my pièce de résistance for postpartum dressing. Mini dresses are always flattering for petite women like me (I’m only 4’11”), and a touch of extra volume is great for easing back into fashion post-pregnancy. I love this one by Free People and have also been wearing this one and this one from Zara on repeat.

the boiler jumpsuit
I rented this Ulla Johnson jumpsuit from Rent the Runway and was pleasantly surprised when I was actually able to button it up. I have always loved the juxtaposition of a utility jumpsuit paired with glam shoes and was so happy to be back in an outfit that the “old me” would have worn. The paperbag waist was both flattering and comfortable for postpartum, so I’ve linked a couple more affordable options below.

the paperbag waist piece
Speaking of paperbag waist pieces, I’m so happy that they are trending this season because the elastic waistband is perfect for accomodating my ever-changing size. From faux leather shorts to cool cargo pants, there are so many versatile and flattering options to try this fall. I paired these incredibly budget-friendly shorts with a cropped plaid jacket, but the sky is the limit for styling this trend.
