I am so excited to introduce a new beauty series here on a-listed. I have always been obsessed with reading about other people’s beauty routine and tips for looking their best. I inevitably garner inspiration to buy a newly released product or try the latest trending spa treatment. Luckily for me, I have several friends here in New York who either work in the beauty industry or are even more addicted to Sephora than I am. In this series, I’ll be interviewing beauty babes in-the-know to find out what products they just can’t live without.
First up, meet my friend and beauty expert, Joy Hernon, who I met during our days working together at Marie Claire. She was a beauty editor there at the time and is now a working with brands like Laura Geller, Chanel and a beauty tech brand called Anthropics as a consultant. When we worked together, she was always giving me the scoop on the best products before they even hit the shelves and was such a skincare resource, so I only thought it fair to share the wealth with you guys here. Would love to hear what you think of this new series!
What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
After hitting snooze about 10 times, I jump in the shower to wake me up. I sometimes attempt to do a morning workout-I’m addicted to barre and SLT-but it’s not always successful and is often left for after work.
What time do you wake up?
Well I set my alarm for 7am, but 7.45 is probably more accurate.
What does your morning skincare regimen include?
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic– I lather my face with this after the shower and wait for it to soak into my skin. It helps protect me from free radicals that can lead to aging.
SK-II Essential Power Cream– The rich cream keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day.
Le Mer The Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Daily UV Protecting Fluid– No matter the time of year, I never leave the house without SPF. This light-weight fluid is the perfect formula.
Can you walk us through your daily makeup look?
I start by applying Clinique CC Cream (typically in a shade darker to give me a little bit of color). I like how it provides light coverage and isn’t cakey.
I’m obsessed with IT Cosmetics CC + Eye Concealer. It’s meant for under your eyes, but I end up using it all over my face. Plus, it has SPF!
I’ve been using Laura Geller’s new Double Take Powder Foundation as a finisher. I feel like it gives a little extra coverage, while still feeling weightless. You can use it wet, but I dust it on dry before applying mascara. Next, I curl and layer on 2-to-3 coats of Lancome Definicils Mascara to emphasize my lashes. TheBrowGal Skinny Eyebrow Pencil really helps to complete my look, while leaving my arches looking natural. I like how a pencil gives subtle definition.
As a beauty editor, you have your hands on all the latest and greatest product
before it hits the market. What innovative product are you most excited about right now?
Highlighters and color correcting products are both having a major moment. Every brand from Make Up For Ever to YSL has been getting their feet wet in the area.
What’s your day-to-day hair styling routine?
I try to wash my hair every other day with Oribe Shampoo and Conditioner for Beautiful Color. Once towel-dried, I spritz my hair with Davines Blowdry Primer to prevent damage from heat stylers. I use a Harry Josh Blowdryer to dry, and occasionally if I’m feeling sassy, the Beachwaver to throw in a couple of loose waves. On my off days, I depend on Rene Furterer Dry Shampoo to keep me looking fresh.
What products are always in your handbag?
Chanel Lipstick (usually 3), without fail.
Do you lay your outfit out the night before or just wing it?
Wing it! Even if I lay out something to wear the night before I end up changing my mind before I’m out the door.
Do you have a go-to breakfast?
I either opt for a shake (with spinach, frozen cherries, chocolate almond milk and whey protein) or gluten-free oatmeal.
For anyone reading who also wants to break into beauty, do you have any
parting words of advice?
I’m always a big advocate of internships, that’s how I got my start!
